This set of four vintage informational and promotional films explore the problem of monetary lack in its moderate and most extreme manifestations. Falling under the heading "American Thrift," the first two films were produced by the Jam Handy Organization on behalf of General Motors in 1962. Focusing on the American housewife as a model of thrifty spending and financial smarts, the films explore the practical ways in which 1960s households saved money and functioned within tight financial budgets. In the second section entitled "Poverty in Rural America," viewers are exposed to the horrific reality of impoverished people throughout more rural areas of America. Sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, the films examine possible ways in which citizens can tackle this crisis.
